The Power of Confidence

I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living

– Psalm 27:13

Could you think about what a person with confidence looks like? How do you feel when you have confidence to do a task vs. you do not? That’s totally different right? In the bible, God called us so many times to be confident in life, He said, Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9). Confidence by definition means to believe in one’s ability and or self-trust. American essayist Ralph Emerson said, Self-trust is the first secret of success. Confidence is powerful because it provides us with three kinds of power.

Confidence inspires the power of hope and it propels us to act positively with assurance to win

There was ever a CEO who was deep in debt and could not see any way out. One day he sat on a park bench to run away from the creditors, head in hands, wondering how to save his company from the bankruptcy.

Suddenly an old man appeared before him, “I can see that something is troubling you,” he said. After listening to the executive’s woes, the old man said, “I can help you.”

He asked the man’s name, wrote out a check, and pushed it into his hand saying, “Take this money. Meet me here exactly after one year from today, and pay me back at that time.” Then he disappeared as quickly as he could.

The CEO saw in his hand a check for $500,000, signed by John D. Rockefeller, one of the richest men in the world at that time!

“I can erase all my money worries in an instant!” he thought. But instead, the executive decided to put the check in a drawer instead to cash it. However with the check in his mind, he moved forward boldly, negotiated better deals and extended terms of payment. He closed several big sales. Within a few months, he was out of debt and making money once again. After one year, he returned to the park with the uncashed check. At the agreed-upon time, the old man appeared. But just as CEO was about to hand back the check and share his success story, a nurse came running up and grabbed the old man and cried, “Finally I caught you! Don’t bother people anymore. Why are you always escaping from the rest home and telling people you are John D. Rockefeller.” And she led the old man away by the arm.

The executive just stood there, stunned. All year long he’d been wheeling and dealing, buying and selling, convinced he had half a million dollars behind him.

Suddenly, he realized that it wasn’t the money that had turned his life around. It was his renewed hope that gave him the power to achieve anything he went after.

Confidence releases the power of courage to win battles in life

Confidence is from heart and it is a mental readiness for any actions we will take. When we have the confidence to do something, we visualize a picture of winning and the picture further enforce our competitive power, then we follow our heart, act out what we believe and hope for, eventually see the picture in reality.

In the first Samuel 17, it tells that a teenage boy, David, volunteered to fight a giant, Goliath, who had mocked, challenged all the soldiers of Israelites though his brothers tried to stop him. The giant laughed at him when he saw David, short and young without any weapons in hands, and he cursed at him, hurling threats and insults. However, David shouted at him with confidence, "You come against me with sword and spear, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, today I will give your body to the birds of the air and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into my hands." As Goliath moved toward David, David reached his hands into his bag and slung one of his stones at Goliath's head. And the stone sank into the giant's forehead and he fell face down on the ground.

Confidence gives us the power of laser focus on what we can do

People with confidence know their strength and weakness and they can strategically play out their strength and avoid their weakness or wisely collaborate with other people with the strength that they lack to form a team. And they apply collective wisdom to win together.

Dear friends, today I am calling you to develop your confidence so you can be empowered by it every day and achieve something bigger beyond yourselves. If you are a child of God, your source of confidence is the mighty God, and it said, if God is for us, who can be against us (Roman 8:31) and please be confident of this, we will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of living, Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD (Psalm 27:13-14); if you are not a child of God, I hope you can make the decision as soon as possible so you can gain the ever flowing confidence from Him. Finally I hope you can live out each moment with unquenchable burning confidence, full of the power of hope, the power of courage and the power of focus so you can win every hassle or battle in life and shine brightly like stars in the dark sky.
